A thin layer of protective inner bark gives the cork oak its unique ability to survive and regenreate itself after the debarking process. Stripping the bark requires great skill, as the inner bark must not be damaged. A specially designed hatchet is used for the stripping process.

The outer surface cork bark is stripped from tree while it continues to grow and is never cut down. The trees grow very slowly. They may grow to be 250 years old. Most of these trees grow in Portugal.
• Peeling requires a lot of experience, whereas only specialists are employed. After peeling, the cork bark should be stored in dry areas and stabilized for at lest 6 months. During production all of the harvested materials should be utilized with no waste thrown away.
• Cork is peeled only from the trunk and from branches of a specified circumference down to the thin reddish parent layer, below which new cork is growing (approx. 1.5-4mm per year) 20 % of the bark is left intact to protect the tree from drying up.
